What Are Indices?

An index is a statistical measurement that represents the value of a defined segment of the market. Investors use indices as reference points for tracking the performance of various parts of the stock market.

There are different types of indices. For example, a national index represents how the stock market of a particular nation is performing. Commonly quoted market indices are actually national indices that are made up of the stocks of some of the largest public companies listed in their country’s stock exchanges. An example is the American S&P 500, which represents the collective value of the best companies trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

The performance of these indices generally indicates the country’s economic condition and even investor sentiment about the companies themselves.
